The extensions most buyers actually choose between, including several country codes that are marketed globally.

What makes an extension popular

Three things, and only one of them is marketing. The first is age: .com, .net, and .org have been in the root since 1985 and carry three decades of accumulated familiarity that no new extension can buy. The second is fitness for a purpose — .io and .ai are popular in technology not because they were promoted there but because they read as words the audience already uses. The third is price, and this is where care is needed, because several extensions in this group achieved their volume through first-year discounting rather than demand.

The country codes hiding in this list

Six of the extensions here are technically country-code top-level domains sold generically: .io belongs to the British Indian Ocean Territory, .ai to Anguilla, .co to Colombia, .me to Montenegro, .tv to Tuvalu, and .cc to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. They are grouped here rather than with the country extensions because that is how they are bought and used.

The distinction still matters. A country-code extension exists at the discretion of the country or territory it belongs to. Policy can change, and in at least one case in recent years the underlying sovereignty of the territory has changed. This is not a reason to avoid them — very large companies use them — but it is a reason to understand what you are building on.

What the 2012 round changed

For most of the internet's history the generic namespace was tiny. ICANN's 2012 New gTLD Program changed that by opening applications for essentially arbitrary strings, and the consequences are visible in most of the extensions on this page. .app, .dev, .tech and .cloud all come from that round, and several of them were contested hard: twelve applicants filed for .app, six for .cloud including Amazon, Google and Symantec, and .tech went to an independent registry that outbid Google at auction in September 2014 and then acquired the losing applicant entity weeks later.

Three structural changes matter more to a buyer than the individual strings.

  • Supply of memorable names went up sharply. The exact word you want is frequently registrable in a credible extension even though it has been gone in .com since the 1990s. That is the main practical benefit of the round and it is a real one.
  • Registry premium tiering became mainstream. Several of the new registries price short, dictionary and keyword names above the standard rate, and that premium generally recurs at every renewal rather than applying once. The legacy extensions largely do not work this way — .com has no registry premium tier at all — so a habit formed on .com will mislead you elsewhere.
  • Registry and registrar separation was relaxed. The strict vertical separation that applies to .com does not apply generally, which is why the operator of an extension may also be one of the largest retailers of it. That is permitted under current rules and worth knowing when you assume the two roles are always distinct.

The round also produced the first namespaces where HTTPS is not optional. The whole of .app and the whole of .dev are on the HSTS preload list, hard-coded into browsers, so a site on either will not load over plain HTTP at all. That is a feature for a software product and an obstacle for anybody who was planning to put up a holding page first and sort out certificates later.

A second round is now underway: applications open on 30 April 2026 and close on 12 August 2026, and registry service providers have been pre-evaluated ahead of it. What that means for a buyer is less than the announcements suggest. Applications take time to evaluate, delegation follows evaluation, and a delegated extension typically opens with a trademark-holder sunrise phase before general availability. Nothing from this round will solve a naming problem you have this quarter. If a new string eventually suits you, it will be a decision for a future rebrand, not a reason to wait.

Choosing between a memorable name in a less familiar extension and a compromised name in .com

This is the decision most buyers actually face, and it is usually presented as a matter of taste when it is really a matter of trade-offs that can be listed.

Taking the exact name in a less familiar extension buys you the thing your audience remembers: one word, said once, matching your company name, your product and your social handles. What you pay for it is ongoing. Some proportion of people will type .com out of habit and land on somebody else's page. Some proportion will hear .com when you say something similar. Worst of all, some proportion of your mail will go to the neighbouring domain, where it leaves your control entirely and you will usually never learn it was sent. And you will say the extension out loud, every time, for as long as the brand exists.

Taking a compromised name in .com buys you default behaviour: nobody has to be told, nobody mistypes the extension, and the mail arrives. What you pay is the compromise itself — an extra word, a hyphen, an abbreviation, a plural, a respelling — and you pay it in every conversation, every dictation and every spelling-out over the phone. A hyphen in particular tends to leak traffic to the unhyphenated version, which is to say to whoever already owns it.

Three questions resolve most cases.

  • Who is the audience? Developers, investors and technical buyers navigate by link and by search and are entirely comfortable with .io, .ai and .dev. Consumers, and anybody reached through word of mouth, broadcast or print, revert to .com under pressure.
  • How does the name travel? A brand that grows through search, paid acquisition and links is far less exposed to the verbal cost than one that grows through people repeating it to each other.
  • Who holds the .com? A parked or unused .com is a name with a holder rather than a business, and holders sell — often for less than people assume, and the option stays open. A .com actively used by a competitor in your market is a permanent leak of traffic, mail and attention, and it is the one circumstance where a compromised name is usually the better answer.

Whichever way you go, monitor the other. The cost of a periodic availability check on the name you did not take is nothing, and the cost of discovering a competitor bought it is not.
