What .shop is
.shop is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) delegated in ICANN's 2012 new gTLD round, aimed at retail and e-commerce. IANA classifies it as a standard, non-sponsored generic TLD: no community charter, no restriction on who may use it.
The registry operator is GMO Registry, Inc. of Tokyo, part of the GMO Internet Group, which has run the extension since delegation with no change of operator and no change of back-end technical provider. GMO won the string at an ICANN auction on 28 January 2016, after nine applicants had contested it. The registry agreement is dated 8 April 2016; IANA registered the extension on 5 May 2016, delegation followed on 9 May, and general availability opened on 26 September 2016 after a sunrise period for trademark holders and an early access phase.
One relationship is easy to misread. GMO Internet Group operates the .shop registry and separately owns Onamae.com, a major Japanese registrar that is the world's largest distributor of .xyz, a competing extension. Registry and registrar are distinct roles; this group occupies both.
Who can register .shop
Anyone, anywhere. Despite the retail semantics there are no eligibility restrictions on .shop: no requirement to operate a shop, no business registration, no country nexus, no identity or credential check beyond the contact-data obligations ICANN imposes on every gTLD registrar.
With no declaration to make, there is no audit to fail and no extension-specific consequence for a false one. Enforcement is generic: suspension for materially inaccurate registration data, and loss of a name through the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (the arbitration route trademark owners use against infringing registrations) or the Uniform Rapid Suspension system. The word shop in your domain is a claim you make, not one anyone verified.
What .shop costs to own
Live pricing appears elsewhere on this page; the structure is what should drive the decision, and on .shop it is extreme.
The first-year price and the renewal price are effectively different products. Registrars discount the first year heavily, often to a small fraction of what the same name costs to keep, and the multiple is among the widest in the industry. The renewal rate itself is an ordinary mid-market gTLD rate, and it is higher than .com's.
Two things follow. The advertised number is an acquisition cost, not a cost of ownership: compare the renewal rate multiplied by the years you expect to keep the name, and beyond roughly two years .shop costs more than .com. And, in fairness, the discount is real money and the model is legitimate. A registrar sells the first year below its own cost because the margin sits in the renewal, the hosting, and the mailbox. It is a bad deal only if you did not know the second-year figure before committing.
Many buyers evidently did not. Verisign's Domain Name Industry Brief for the second quarter of 2026 puts .shop's renewal percentage at 14.2%, the lowest of any of the ten largest gTLDs: roughly six registrations in seven are not renewed.
Premium names need care. The registry defines a premium name by its registration fee only, and no registry statement on premium renewal could be located; registrars indicate that registration, renewal, transfer, and restore are all charged at premium rates. Treat perpetual premium renewal as likely but registrar-sourced, and check the individual name. Restoration after expiry costs substantially more than a renewal.
Registration terms, renewals, and transfers
.shop names may be registered for one to ten years, confirmed verbatim in GMO Registry's Domain Name Registration Policies, version 1.1 of 21 October 2016. One registrar caps renewal at nine years, almost certainly to keep the total term inside ten rather than because of a registry rule.
Transfers use the standard gTLD mechanism: obtain an EPP authorization code from the losing registrar, present it to the gaining registrar, and the transfer auto-approves after five days if the losing registrar does not respond. There is no tag change and no registry-specific form. .shop auth codes are 8 to 32 characters and must contain at least one alphabetic, one numeric, and one special character; a code transcribed incorrectly is the most common reason a transfer stalls.
The registration policy is silent on transfers and grace periods, so ICANN's Transfer Policy governs by force of the registry agreement. A 60-day lock applies after a change of registrant, with a registrar-level opt-out. A 60-day restriction after initial registration also applies, but as a right for the registrar to deny a transfer rather than a registry-set flag: no registry-enforced serverTransferProhibited lock for .shop is documented anywhere we could locate.
After expiry come an auto-renew grace period, then a 30-day Redemption Grace Period (the window after a domain is deleted during which only the original registrant can recover it, against a restore fee), with deletion 35 days after expiry. A Transfer Policy review adopted in March 2025 would cut both 60-day locks to 30 days, but no effective date has been published and the 60-day regime remains current.
WHOIS, RDAP, and privacy
RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol, is a structured replacement for the free-text WHOIS response, and it became the definitive source of gTLD registration data on 28 January 2025. Registries may sunset port-43 WHOIS at their option, and GMO has effectively done so: whois.nic.shop now presents an RDAP search interface, and the registry's RDAP endpoint is live at rdap.nic.shop.
What is published follows ICANN's Registration Data Policy, in effect since 21 August 2025. Personal registrant fields are redacted where redaction is legally required or supported by a commercially reasonable purpose, while a contact email address or web form for reaching the registrant must be published.
Privacy and proxy services are available, and the status is worth phrasing precisely: GMO's registration policy does not address them at all, and registrars record WHOIS privacy as supported. That is an absence of prohibition rather than an affirmative endorsement; the effect for a registrant is the same.
DNSSEC is supported, though .shop could not be confirmed as named within the scope of GMO's published practice statement. Internationalized domain names are supported, and .shop has the most developed IDN policy of its peer group: A-labels must be valid under IDNA2008, variant IDNs are blocked from registration, and each domain is tagged with a language or script. The registry's own script table could not be located; registrars list roughly thirteen scripts.
Who .shop suits, and who should avoid it
.shop has the clearest legitimate use case in its commercial class. If you run a retail or direct-to-consumer business, the .com you want is taken, and yourbrand.shop reads naturally to a customer, the extension does real work: the string is instantly self-explanatory in a way a meaningless one is not. It also suits an established brand separating the storefront from the corporate site, where the equity lives on the main domain and .shop simply signals where to buy.
It suits you poorly if you are not a retailer, because the semantics pull against the name. It suits you poorly if the domain itself must carry legitimacy to a cold audience: an unfamiliar brand on .shop faces more skepticism than the same store on .com, and the documented phishing association is part of why. It suits you poorly if order confirmations and password resets are mission-critical and you have not tested deliverability. And it suits you poorly if you are buying it for search visibility, which it does not provide.
Common mistakes with .shop
- Expecting a keyword-extension search benefit. Registering widgets.shop does not help you rank for widgets or for shopping queries. Google's position, stated repeatedly and most recently by John Mueller, is that gTLD choice confers neither advantage nor penalty; any effect comes from the site, not the string.
- Buying the promotional first year without pricing the renewal. The multiple here is among the largest in the industry, and the 14.2% renewal rate shows what most registrants do when they meet the second-year price. Price the renewal before the name goes on packaging or signage, because changing it later costs far more than the domain.
- Running the storefront and transactional email from the same untested .shop domain. Order confirmations landing in spam is an expensive failure for a retailer. Configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC from day one, test against Gmail, Microsoft 365, and a corporate filter before launch, and consider sending transactional mail from a separate established domain.
The auction that set the price of a word
Nine applicants wanted .shop in ICANN's 2012 round. When applicants contest the same string and cannot settle privately, ICANN runs an auction of last resort, and on 28 January 2016 GMO Registry won .shop for a sum the group reported at US$41.5 million, at the time the highest price paid for a new gTLD at an ICANN auction. GMO announced the figure itself, which makes it better evidenced than most auction prices, though such figures are generally reported rather than audited.
The number is a useful lens on what a descriptive extension is worth to a registry. Nothing was bought except the right to operate four letters of the domain name system, subject to the registry agreement: no customers, no software, no brand. The valuation rested entirely on the belief that a consumer-legible retail word would attract a large, renewing base of merchants at a healthy price.
A decade on, the outcome is instructive rather than flattering. .shop is the seventh-largest gTLD, with ICANN's March 2026 transaction report showing a verified floor of 3,718,781 domains across the twelve largest registrars, and it is still growing on creates against deletes. But the growth is promotional: one registrar's base grew nearly fourfold year on year, to over 1.16 million domains, while issuing 141 explicit renewal commands in March 2026, and part of even that expansion is migration between two brands under one corporate roof. Registry-wide renewal commands for the month numbered 18,162.
Set the two facts side by side. A word bought for a reported US$41.5 million is now distributed at a small fraction of its own renewal price and renews at 14.2%. That is not a story about a bad extension. It is a story about what happens when a registry must recover a very large fixed cost through registrars competing on the first-year price.
Common questions
Do you need to own a shop to register a .shop domain?
No. .shop is completely open. There is no retail requirement, no business registration check, and no nexus declaration, so anyone anywhere can register one.
Why is my .shop renewal so much more than what I paid?
Because the first year was a promotion and the renewal is the real price. Registrars discount the first year of a .shop registration heavily and recover the difference at renewal, which sits above .com's renewal rate.
Is .shop bad for SEO?
No, and it is not good for SEO either. Google has stated consistently that generic top-level domain choice confers no ranking advantage or penalty, so a .shop domain does not rank better for shopping queries.
Do .shop domains get blocked by spam filters?
Some filters treat .shop with elevated suspicion. Interisle's Phishing Landscape 2025 ranked it fifth globally by raw phishing domain count, so test deliverability to Gmail, Microsoft 365, and a corporate filter before relying on it for transactional email.
Can I keep my details private on a .shop domain?
